The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all programs, services, and activities offered by colleges and universities that receive federal funding. The law ensures that no person with a disability is excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity.
Disability discrimination can take many forms, including but not limited to:
- Denying reasonable accommodations for students, faculty, or staff with disabilities
- Failing to provide accessible facilities, classrooms, or materials
- Unequal access to programs, services, or activities because of disability
- Harassment or hostile behavior directed at someone because of their disability
Harassment may include verbal abuse, written or graphic statements, physical assault, or any other conduct that is threatening, harmful, or humiliating. Harassing conduct does not need to be directed at a single individual and may target a group of people with disabilities.
