The Beyond Boundaries Screening & Discussion Series is an annual, six-part film series that explores issues of diversity, equity, and social justice, including race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and the intersections among these identities. The series creates opportunities for dialogue and reflection among students, faculty, staff, and members of the greater Western New York community.

All screenings are free and open to the public and take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Tower Auditorium.

The Librarians (2025)

Directed by Kim Snyder

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and First Amendment rights in this Emmy-winning documentary. The film examines book bans, censorship, and the growing threats faced by librarians who advocate for the freedom to read.

TCB—The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing (2025)

Directed by Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez

Featuring director Louis Massiah in person.

The film explores the life and legacy of Toni Cade Bambara, an influential Black feminist writer, filmmaker, and cultural worker. Through the voices of her friends, colleagues, and students, the film highlights Bambara’s approach to cultural organizing and community empowerment.

Heightened Scrutiny (2025)

Directed by Sam Feder

Civil rights lawyer Chase Strangio battles before the Supreme Court for transgender adolescents’ access to gender-affirming health care. The film examines the legal and media battles surrounding transgender rights and the broader struggle for equality and justice.

Join the Social Justice Book Club this fall as we read So Many Stars: An Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two-Spirit People of Color by Caro De Robertis. This engaging collection brings together the wisdom and experiences of twenty elders of color.

The book club meets in person every other Wednesday from noon–1:00 p.m. in Butler 318.
