The Dr. Muriel A. Howard Presidential Awards Reception for Equity and Campus Diversity honored two students at the Awards Reception April 11, 2017. President Katherine Conway-Turner and WGS Coordinator Meg Knowles, Associate Professor in Communications, recognized Sage Cerbone and Giannina Callejas as outstanding students in this program and at Buffalo State College.
The Women and Gender Studies Outstanding Student Award recognizes excellence in research, projects or service involving the promotion of issues related to women and gender studies, by an outstanding student who is a Minor in Women & Gender Studies at Buffalo State College.
This award was presented to Sage Cerbone, December 2017 graduate, History & English Major, Women and Gender Studies Minor, 4.0 GPA.
Sage Cerbone grew up on Buffalo's West Side and attended inner city schools. Giving back to that community, she works with Peace in the City, a non-profit after-school program for urban youth. She has grown from a student to a mentor in this program and plans to continue working with young girls after graduation. Women and gender studies faculty mentor: Jennifer Ryan-Bryant, Ph.D.
The Women and Gender Studies Graduating Senior Award recognizes excellence in research, projects or service involving the promotion of issues related to women and gender studies, by a graduating senior who is a minor in Women & Gender Studies at Buffalo State College.
This award was presented to Giannina Callejas, May 2017 graduate, Sociology Major, Women and Gender Studies Minor, 3.62 GPA.
Giannina Callejas has initiated what she hopes will become a national women's empowerment movement called "It All Starts With Her" and has made a start by leading several diversity and gender programs in Porter Hall as a Senior Resident Assistant. She is a Ronald McNair Scholar and is on the Dean's List. Women and Gender Studies faculty mentor: Michael Niman, Ph.D.
